Electric League Series:  Customer Substation

Mon Valley ICD is pleased to be able to again offer courses affiliated with the Electric League of Western Pennsylvania. The Mission of the Electric League of Western Pennsylvania is to be the recognized leader that educates and promotes the electrical industry.  

This fall, Customer Substation Systems will be offered. This topic is for students interested in learning about the electric utility transmission, sub transmission, and distribution system as it relates to various types of utility and customer substations.

Time permitting one of the two sessions will include a fieldtrip to a typical substation to view firsthand the equipment most typically encountered.

Carpentry/Home Remodeling Series


There are a variety of options for anyone pursuing carpentry and home remodeling skills. 
Need to know how to take a project from start to finish?  Home Remodeling- Design to Finish is just for you!  Offered at the Irvin Union Hall, work with the instructor through the experience of designing space usage, determining materials needed, and completing the project including electrical work, from start to finish!
 
Floor Installation & Refinishing addresses the variety of floor coverings available & the techniques and experience you will need to complete your own home projects. 
Want to get in to advanced finished carpentry?  At Steel Center AVTS, learn the skills of How to Build Stairs or Installation of Hand Rails.

CDL License Course Available

This course is a combination of self-study and hands-on training offered through All State Careers.  Those interested in taking this course will meet individually with a representative from our educational provider.  Information on obtaining a Class 'A" CDL permit, locations to get the required D.O.T. Driver Physical and Drug Screen, and the self-study material will be available at that time.

Computer Classes 

Be sure to check out the schedule for upcoming computer classes. 
For the novice user, we offer, classes such as Introduction to the Internet, and Introduction to using Email.  These classes are follow up classes to our spring course Computers for the 50+!

For more advanced technical users, our technical guru  is offering Understanding Computer Hardware. 

If you are a little more advanced, check out our Introduction to Office 2007, or  the Digital Photo class  coming in January 2011. 

In 2011, look for a new course designed for intermediate users in creating a website...no software needed!

 Effective immediately, tuition assistance benefits are now available to retirees during their first year of retirement. 


Tino Fulimeni Scholarship Fund
In 2009, five $1000 scholarships were awarded to various children/grandchildren of steelworkers. This year, despite difficult economic times, we are committed to awarding at least three Fulimeni Scholarships.

The Tino Fulimeni Scholarship Fund was established to honor the memory of Brother Fulimeni, and is administered by ICD in Merrillville, IN.   Tino was a fanatic about ICD. His commitment and contribution are evident in the success of the Career Development Program.

The following criteria must be met to be eligible for the scholarship drawing:

  • Applicant must be a high school graduate enrolled in college and beginning in the fall semester of 2010 or the spring semester of 2011 or a college student returning to school in the fall semester of 2010 or spring semester of 2011.
  • Applicant must have maintained, in the past, at least a cumulative 3.0 grade point average and can demonstrate this with a transcript if selected.
  • Applicant must be the child/grandchild of a steelworker who is currently eligible to participate in the Career Development Program.
  • Application DEADLINE IS OCTOBER 15, 2010, ICD will only accept applications in our office. Please mail or FAX applications to 219-736-9216 to arrive by that date or bring them to the Twin Towers:

U.S. Steel/USW Pre-Learner Program 

Per our 2008 Labor agreement and in an effort to facilitate testing to enter the Mechanical or Electrical maintenance training program, U.S. Steel and the United Steelworkers have chosen an online standardized Pre-Learner Maintenance Training Program to provide employees with the opportunity to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to test at a higher level when entering into the Maintenance Training Program.

The Program will be administered through the local ICD Program located at the Mon Valley Training Hub. Contact the Mon Valley ICD coordinators for more information.
